We’ve Grown Again!

We are pleased to announce that HDSW has been selected by the Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health to assume responsibility for the operation of a large case management program that was relinquished by another Westchester provider.

The program consists of two Intensive Case Managers, nine Supportive Case Managers, three Homeless Outreach workers and two peer Advocacy Workers, for a total of 16 new staff, serving over 250 recipients, most of whom live in the central Westchester area. The program is funded by a combination of NY State Office of Mental Health monies and Medicaid reimbursements for a total of over $800,000 per year.

HDSW presently operates an Intensive/Supportive Case Management Program consisting of four staff and serving 72 clients, supervised by Liza Szpylka, our Director of Supported Housing and Case Management Services. Liza will oversee the additional case management services, with the help of several staff who will have some supervisory responsibilities. Fortunately, we were able to hire eight staff of the former provider, many of whom were well known to and respected by our current residential, case management and HOPE House staff, thus smoothing the transition for recipients. Two of our current housing case managers, have transferred to the expanded program, and we have hired six new staff.

The Case Management Program is located at HDSW headquarters, 930 Mamaroneck Avenue in Mamaroneck, in space formerly occupied by a tenant. Thanks to the skills of HDSW Deputy Director Kathy Pandekakes, we were able to outfit the offices quickly to prepare for the arrival of the new program.

The expanded case management program began operations on Monday, March 3, 2003 with a full day of orientation and a celebratory lunch for current and arriving staff. It has been exciting to open our doors to new employees and to new recipients of case management services, and we welcome the expertise and life experiences they bring with them.

J.P. Morgan Chase ONCE AGAIN SHOWS ITS CONTINUED COMMITMENT TO HDSW & HOPE HOUSE

In November 2002, HDSW received a $5,000 J.P. Morgan Chase Foundation Human and Supportive Services Grant for General Operating Support of HOPE House.

This much needed general funding will be applied towards the needs of HOPE House, a psychosocial clubhouse located in Port Chester, which serves Westchester County residents who are recovering from psychiatric illnesses. The programs at HOPE House focus on the abilities and talents of members, encouraging them to return to the mainstream and assisting them to pursue education, employment, and social activities.

HDSW would also like to express its appreciation to J.P. Morgan Chase for its donation of furniture to our expanded Case Management Program offices. HDSW received chairs, filing cabinets, tables, bookcases, and artwork, all of which will facilitate the work of our new case managers.
